Tackling the Fun To-Dos is Still Progress

Yesterday I had trouble motivating myself to continue the purge. I couldn’t seem to tackle the stacks of boxes which rose like mountains throughout our living room, let alone the ones in the basement.

I decided that the answer was not to try to make progress on that task. Instead I switched to another list of ToDos and started to cook. I often find cooking to be relaxing, and this was definitely one of those times. I made a spicy rice loaf, a burrito-less burrito and a noodle kugel for some other night or school lunches. I had planned to make some curried zucchini soup but I ran out of time before I needed to head out to the kids’ school.

Today I find myself once again not able to tackle the purging task. This time, however, it is because I have been called in to help my mother-in-law with some stuff. Given everything else happening today (my daughter starting her new art class, two meetings at our son’s school tonight and a friend’s performance at a local club) I am really grateful I made extra food yesterday!

The thing that I did manage to do this morning was create a working itinerary for our trip to Iceland. (Oh yeah, I haven’t mentioned we are going to Iceland. We are going to Iceland! Don’t worry. I am sure I will write a lot about it in the future.) This is really our first big deal family trip. It has been so exciting to research the area and seek out the various options available to us. I have determined three things.

1) Iceland is a very expensive place. Advertised excursions can cost a bundle (and multiply that by four and it is a mega-bundle!). One could easily spend $300 a day without including lodging and food.

2) It just might be possible to have a fabulous time doing almost free things – all of the outdoor sights are free so any hiking trails, parks, public art, etc. are free.

3) There is no way we have enough time to do even half of what I would want in the 4 1/2 days we are there. We will definitely need to go back. Maybe next time in summer.
