Making Their Own Lunches – Update
My “get the kids to make their own lunches” project has progressed to the next stage. At the start of October they worked together to fill out two weeks worth of lunch menus. I went grocery shopping to make sure we had all of the necessary ingredients in the house. That night we all gathered in the kitchen for a few hours while we prepared the various dishes and packaged them into single-serving sizes to be frozen and ready to pop in their lunches.
Okay, up through the grocery shopping part that’s what happened. Yet somehow we failed to implement the kids making their own lunch part of the kids make their own lunch project. It’s not that they are resistant to cooking with me. They both love to help in the kitchen. We just never seem to have the time. Between school work and lessons, showering and bedtime, we barely find the time to be together let alone embark on a project which would take the kind of time cooking takes.
So this past week, guided by the menu they filled out, I have been preparing their lunches. In some ways it is easier than before. I no longer have to think “what shall I feed them?” each night. And as long as I don’t start thinking that I have turned myself into a short order cook who makes whatever the customer wants I am okay with it. Mostly. For now.
At least as long as I continue to believe this is the path to kicking the next phase of the project into gear.
Tomorrow’s lunch: turkey burgers on potato rolls, carrots, and apple slices.
