The Other Side

teen's bedroom door decorated with poster and balloons

Here I stand
Outside your door
while on the other side you are being the teenager you are meant to be

I can picture you
headphones on
texting with friends
homework strewn about your bed

I want to knock.
I want to knock

not because I have anything to say
not because I think you might be doing something I ought to stop.

I want to knock because I miss you!

You have reached an age where you are so interesting,

so amazing,
so engaging

that I find we don’t talk enough.

Here I stand
Outside your door
while on the other side you are being the teenager you are meant to be

And I laugh to myself
remembering those days when you were younger
and all I yearned for were

a few moments

alone.
