Writing out of my mind
by Joan Silberlicht Epstein
I have been a keen observer of people and my surroundings for as long as I can remember. I sat and I watched and I wondered. While I never took to hiding in dumbwaiters (does anyone actually have one of these?) Harriet the Spy fascinated me.
I have not always spoken up about my observations, but I have always had plenty to say. This blog is a compilation of those things. Welcome to the inside of my head!
Make It an Easy Night
There is something truly wonderful about coming home to a house in which everyone there is already asleep. There is no squabbling. No flying balls. No instrument being practiced. There is no TV or Wii. No radio or humming. The house is quiet and calm.
An Open Letter to President Obama
Dear President Obama,
I am writing to thank you.
My husband and I have two children (ages 13 and 8). We are very fortunate. We have always had a roof over our heads and enough to
The Effects of Frankenstorm
We are very fortunate and have little to report regarding the impact of Frankenstorm. We never lost power. The two limbs which came down in our backyard didn’t damage anything. Our basement remained dry. Our kids only missed one day of school. As we view
Making Their Own Lunches – Update
My “get the kids to make their own lunches” project has progressed to the next stage. At the start of October they worked together to fill out two weeks worth of lunch menus. I went grocery shopping to make sure we had all of the necessary ingredients in the house.
The 30 Minute Scramble
That last 30 minutes or so before the kids get off the school bus are often unproductive. I find myself waiting for them to arrive and reluctant to start something new since I know I will soon be interrupted. I am going to try something new.
Learning to Take My Own Advice
I think I give fairly good advice. Not always the best and rarely spectacular, but most often solid and good. Like tonight when I counseled our eighth grade son to go to bed rather than to stay up and finish his homework. It was already after eleven o’clock.
Learning From My Little One
My daughter is in the midst of celebrating her eighth birthday. For the past several weeks she has been letting us know what sorts of thing she would like for her birthday: books, toys, accessories, etc. It is a great thing for her to do as many people ask me “what can I
Tackling the Fun To-Dos is Still Progress
Yesterday I had trouble motivating myself to continue the purge. I couldn’t seem to tackle the stacks of boxes which rose like mountains throughout our living room, let alone the ones in the basement. I decided that the answer was not to
I Am a Halloweenie
Halloween is coming. I will admit to being a little sad that trick or treating doesn’t seem to be getting rained out this year. I am not opposed to Halloween per se. I love helping my kids turn their ideas into wearable costumes. I enjoy wandering around the
Pump Me Up
Today’s plan: drop off a bunch of the stuff I have gathered and boxed up for discarding. I started the day by getting a pep talk from my sister. She cheered me on, reminding me of the importance of getting things out of the house as easily and quickly as possible.
Double Bonus
Often what one starts out doing for one reason turns out to have unintended consequences. When you are lucky, those unintended consequences are positive. I think this is a case where the fallout is going to be positive – at least in the long run!
Baby Steps
I remember the feelings I had when my daughter took her first steps (I wasn’t in the room when my firstborn took his first steps and I really don’t want to go into the feelings I had about missing that milestone!). We were all so pleased as she carefully placed
17,000 and Counting
Today is a special day. It is our 20th wedding anniversary. It is also my 17,000 day of being alive. I could decide on a day as special as this that I deserve to be pampered – by others, by me. I could spend the day sitting around with my feet up and reading a book while
